January in the Mid Atlantic states where I live is a time when snowfall is a distinct possibility. Some years are more precipitation-heavy than others, and lately it seems the snow doesn’t stay around very long, but I have many memories of epic snowstorms and other snow-centered activities.
This week, I invite you to write about snow: days spent playing in the snow, memories of snowstorms and “Snowmageddon” events, and other snow-related activities. A few ideas to get you started:
Write about a day when you woke up to discover that it snowed the night before.
What kinds of adventures have you had with family or friends on a snow day, such as sledding, snowball fights, making snow angels, building a snow fort, etc.?
Write a story or poem from the perspective of a snowman/snowperson. What would they observe or experience if they were sentient?
What was the most memorable snow day in your life, whether as a child or as an adult?
What do you—or a character from a story you’re writing—love or hate about snow?
Recommendation: set a timer for 25 minutes and see what comes up. You can write by hand or type it out—whatever writing method works for you.
Have fun writing!
